A KNOWN ISIS sympathizer-turned drug trafficker in Central Mindanao was killed in a buy-bust operation in Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat which ended up in a gunbattle late Thursday afternoon, Police Regional Office 12 director, Brigadier General Michael John F. Dubrai said yesterday.
Suspect Al Rashed Sungan Layao, described as an active member of the Turaife Group, a local terror band known for being an active supporter of the ISIS in Mindanao suffered gunshot wounds in the body and died while being taken to a local hospital, said the PRO12 director.
According to Dubria, the suspect sensed he was dealing with an undercover officer in Crossing Sigbol in Barangay New Cebu, Lambayong municipality at around 3:20 p.m. Thursday and tried to shoot the lawman with a pistol but missed.
Back-up officers returned fire hitting the suspect several times in the body. Recovered from the possession of the slain suspect were 10 heat-sealed plastic sachets containing suspected shabu, a marked P500 bill, a fragmentation grenade and a chamber-loaded caliber .45 pistol with a magazine loaded with five live ammunition.
Dubria said members of the PRO12 Regional Drug Enforcement Unit and Regional Intelligence Division, the Sultan Kudarat Police Provincial Office, the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency and the Regional Intelligence Unit 12 were involved in the operation to neutralize the wanted suspect.
He said a record check showed that the slain suspect was previously monitored to be acting as a close-in bodyguard of ‘Mauwiya,’ a Singaporean bomb-maker who used to train local terrorists on how to manufacture powerful improvised explosive devices in Datu Salibo, Maguindanao province.
The group was held responsible for the bombing of the Roxas night market in Davao City in December 2016 and an April 2019 bomb attack in Isulan, Sultan Kudarat which killed scores of people and wounded dozens.
“The suspect is a known IED courier and liaison of the terror group who also helped monitor the movement of government troops in Sultan Kudarat and other parts of Mindanao, Dubria said.
