March 22, 2019

LUCENA CITY -- After four days of being a subject of police manhunt, the former police chief of Tayabas City who has been named as the “brains” in the killing of a Quezon mayor’s son and his companion has finally turned himself up to police operatives yesterday!

Police Regional Office 4-A director, Chief Supt. Edward Carranza has confirmed the surrender of Supt. Mark Joseph Laygo who has been named by three policemen- turned wistleblowers as the one who ordered the killing of Christian Gayeta, 21, son of Sariaya, Quezon Mayor Marcelo Gayeta and Christopher Manalo, 38, last March 14.

Laygo’s two trusted men, PO3 Robert Legazpi and PO2 Lonald Sumalpong also surrendered.

In a phone interview, Carranza said the surrender was arranged thru Chief Insp. Jose Tucio, chief of the PNP- Regional Special Operation Unit (RSOU) with the help of a third party.

“It so happened that Tucio is a friend of Laygo. So, with the help of a civilian friend, the surrender was done”, said Carranza who issued a manhunt for Laygo last Monday.

Carranza said he was told that they met somewhere in Calamba City at around 10 a.m. And from there, he said the trio are now being escorted by the group of Tucio and elements of Regional Mobile Force Battalion to Quezon Police Provincial Office in Lucena City”,  said Carranza.

Once they arrived at QPPO, Carranza said Laygo will be brought to the office of National Bureau of Investigation (NBI)-Quezon under agent in charge Dominador Villanueva for booking.

NBI- Quezon is conducting a parallel investigation into the case upon requests of Mayor Gayeta.
Carranza said Laygo’ s surrender is a clear manifestation that he is not protecting and coddling him as earlier alleged by Mayor Gayeta.

Gayeta did not give any comment on Laygo’s surrender when contacted by this writer!
