A MAN last Friday night hacked dead his own uncle in Sergio Osmeña, Zamboanga del Norte.

Victim William Lubiano Sr. suffered hack wounds in the face and neck and died on the spot.

Suspect Mario Fernandez, 45, surrendered to the Sergio Osmeña Municipal Police Station hours after killing his uncle in the victim’s house in Purok 2, Bgy. Baong Baguio at 9:30 p.m. last Friday.

An investigation showed that the victim and a fellow farmer, Benjie Calape, 39, were drinking “tuba” at the house of the Lubianos when the suspect arrived.

The suspect started stoning his uncle’s house prompting the victim to confront him while armed with a piece of wood. Unknown to Lubiano, the suspect was armed with a scythe locally known as “bangkong.” The suspect hacked Lubiano repeatedly.

The fatal 22-inch long weapon was recovered by responding policemen 10 meters away from the crime scene.

Police Regional Office 9 director Chief Supt. Emmanuel Luis Licup said an old family grudge is believed to have triggered the killing.

The suspect is being held at the local police jail facing murder charges.
