ONE of two armed men was killed in a gunbattle with a lone policeman in Tuao, Cagayan shortly after they shot the officer without any provocation late Friday evening, Cagayan Police Provincial Office director, Colonel Ariel N. Quilang said.
The official said an official investigation showed that Staff Sergeant Erwin Accad, a member of the Tuao Municipal Police Station was driving his motorcycle along Barangay Villalaida around 9:40 p.m. Friday when the two men called for his help while their motorbike was parked at the side of the road.
When the policeman responded to the two’s call for help, he was reportedly fired upon without any warning by the suspects although his bullet-proof vest saved him from instant death. The officer reportedly managed to duck for cover and exchanged fire with the gunmen hitting one of them identified later as Oliver Duerme, a resident of Arao Street, Bgy. Ugac Sur in Tuguegarao City.
The still unidentified companion of the slain suspect managed to escape on board his motorcycle described as a black Rusi and is still being hunted as of press time.
Responding policemen brought the wounded suspect to a local hospital where an attending physician pronounced him dead upon arrival.
Recovered from the possession of the slain suspect were one caliber .38 revolver with several spent casings and a live ammunition and a hand grenade.
Police Regional Office 2 director, Brigadier General Angelito A. Casimiro has ordered a thorough investigation into the shooting incident.
Quilang also reported the arrest of two local drug traffickers in separate anti-narcotics operations in the province on Friday.
One of the suspects identified as Ronie Cambri, a 22-year-old farmer from Bauan West, Solana municipality yielded a heat-sealed plastic sachet containing suspected shabu and a marked P500 bill paid to him by an undercover officer at 8 p.m. Friday.
The suspect was arrested by officers led by Captain Jhun-jhun Balisi and Lieutenant German Taliping.
The 2nd identified as Rowel Ligsay,41, an employee of the Buguey municipal government was arrested after officers who raided his house in Bgy. Leron at 7 a.m. Friday recovered eight plastic sachets containing the so-called ‘poor man’s cocaine.’
Quilang said that local policemen led by Cpt. Joel Labasan and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency raided the suspect’s house on the strength of a search warrant for violation of Republic Act 9165 issued by Judge Conrado Tabaco of the Aparri Regional Trial Court Branch 9.
