POLICE on Saturday arrested a mayor and a member of the Sangguniang Bayan in Dinagat Islands for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, Caraga police director Chief Supt. Gilbert DC Cruz said yesterday.
Arrested were Mayor Romeo Constantino Vargas of Tubajon municipality and SB member Norlito Ticod.
Members of the local Criminal Investigation and Detection Group, Maritime Group and Special Action Force and the Dinagat Islands Police Provincial Office arrested Vargas in his house in Purok 1, Bgy. Santa Cruz in Tubajon town.
Ticod was arrested in his home in Bgy. Puerto Princesa, Basilisa, Dinagat Islands.
The two were arrested on the strength of search warrants for violation of Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulations Act of 2013.
The search warrants were issued by Judge Shineta Tare Palacio of the Surigao City Regional Trial Court.
Seized in the mayor’s house were one M-16 automatic rifle with scope, a bipod, a magazine with several live ammunition and a convertible air gun.
Ticod was placed under arrest after a search of his house turned up a cal. .45 pistol with loaded magazine and several spent cal. .38 cartridges.
Cruz said both officials failed to present pertinent gun ownership papers.
The two are under the custody of the CIDG - Surigao del Norte.
“These accomplishments must serve as stern warning to all firearm holders, including politicians, that we are serious in conducting intensified drive against loose firearms. Delinquent firearm owners will be subjected to police operations like the implementation of search warrant should they fail to surrender their loose firearms. Anyone, regardless of status, will face the full wrath of the law,” Cruz said.
