A TOP drug trafficker in Mindanao was killed in a shootout with arresting police officers in Cagayan de Oro City Friday evening, Police Regional Office 9 director Brigadier General Jesus D. Cambay Jr. announced yesterday.

In a report to Philippine National Police chief General Archie Francisco F. Gamboa, the official identified the fatality as Mayong Ilang Kamlaon, of Barangay Talon-Talon, Zamboanga City, who was tagged as the Top 3 drug target in Western Mindanao.

Cambay said the suspect was about to be arrested at his hiding place in Barangay Bulua, Cagayan de Oro City around 11 p.m. when he engaged officers in a shootout and was killed in the process.

Recovered from the suspect’s possession were a hand grenade, a loaded .45 semi-automatic pistol and a sling bag with a loaded magazine, the official said.

Cambay said the gunbattle erupted while members of the Zamboanga City Police Office, the Regional Intelligence Unit 9 and Regional Intelligence Division 9, with the support of the PRO10 went to arrest the suspect.

“Our men were forced to return fire at the heavily-armed suspect who is considered as a Level 2 high-value individual working for a Zamboanga City drug group,” said the PRO9 director.
