LOCAL fishermen in Dinagat Islands and Surigao del Norte on Wednesday turned over nine cocaine bricks worth nearly P52 million to barangay and police authorities, Police Regional Office 13 director Brig. Gen. Gillbert DC Cruz said yesterday.
Eight of the cocaine bricks were found floating near the lighthouse in Sitio Dahican in Bgy. Helen, Gibosong Islands in Loreto, Dinagat Islands at 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Local residents immediately turned them over to barangay official who also turned over the cocaine bricks to members of the Dinagat Islands Provincial Mobile Force.
Another group of fishermen turned over to the Loreto Municipal Police Station seven sealed cocaine bricks they found floating at the shoreline at 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday.
Last April 17, another fisherman from Purok 1, Bgy. Abad Santos in Sta. Monica, Surigao del Norte gave to the local police a cocaine brick he found while fishing in the area.
Cruz said the fisherman spotted a rectangular object wrapped in black cellophane while fishing and out of curiosity retrieved it. When he opened the pack, the fisherman saw its contents, all white substance, which prompted him to report the find to the police.
