Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra yesterday expressed willingness to call in the National Bureau of Investigation to probe the killing of a lawyer in Talavera, Nueva Ecija but only if it was “an extra-judicial killing arising from certain advocacies.”
“If there are any indications that the murder of Atty. Bayani Dalangin had anything to do with any of his advocacies, I will direct the inter-agency AO (Administrative Order) 35 task force on EJK (extra judicial killings) to conduct its own investigation,” Guevarra said in a Viber message.
AO 35 created the inter-agency committee on extra-legal killings, enforced disappearances, torture, and other grave violations of right to life, liberty, and security of persons.
Last Friday, unidentified gunmen shot and killed Dalangin in front of his horrified clients in Talavera town.
Dalangin, 73, is the 48th member of the legal community murdered under the administration of President Rodrigo Roa Duterte.
Initial investigation showed that the gunmen killed Dalangin in his office while in a meeting with his clients. The suspects hurriedly fled the crime scene.
Recovered from the place of incident were five spent bullet shells from. 45 caliber pistol.
Investigators are still piecing together evidence to determine the motive in the killing.
Recently, Atty. Fredric Anthony Santos, head of the Bureau of Corrections Legal Service, was shot and killed in Muntinlupa City.
He was declared dead by the Muntinlupa Rescue Team after sustaining gunshot wounds in his head.
Santos testified before the Senate last year which heard the anomalies surrounding the hugely-controversial good conduct time allowance (GCTA) law.
