THE cost of the New People’s Army arson attack on a mining site in Ayungon, Negros Oriental before midnight Tuesday was pegged by the police at around P120 million, the Journal Group learned yesterday.

It turned out that the around 50 heavily-armed NPA guerrillas set on fire 3 backhoes, a loader and 2 heavy-duty power generator sets owned by the PLTSI Mining; a backhoe and a payloader owned by Pilipinas Eco Friendly Mining Corporation, 2 backhoes owned by Doxa Trucking and a backhoe owned by BRTS Trucking.

Police Regional Office 7 director, Chief Superintendent Debold M. Sinas said that the leftist gunmen forced their way inside the quarry site of Pilipinas Eco Friendly Mining Corporation which is mining silica product around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Sinas said that a company security guard identified as Anthony Singco,24, reported the arson attack to the Ayungon Municipal Police Station. The guard said that prior to the burning incident, the gunmen disarmed two guards of their caliber .38 revolvers.

After disarming the guards, the rebels burned the heavy equipment before fleeing towards the direction of nearby Bindoy municipality.

He added that local policemen led by Chief Inspector Romeo Cubo, joined by Army troops inspected the mining site and found that it was already abandoned by the workers. Troops also found an NPA red and yellow banner  with the ‘hammer and sickle’ symbol of the Partidong Komunista ng Pilipinas posted at the high ground.
