NEW People’s Army rebels free village chief, 2 others

NEW People’s Army guerrillas on Friday released a barangay captain, his wife and one of their neighbors they abducted in Bansud, Oriental Mindoro, the Police Regional Office 4-B said yesterday.

However, the rebels are still holding a 4th captive, Reynaldo Malupa, a 55-year-old member of the local Citizen’s Armed Auxiliary.

PRO4-B director Brig. Gen. Tomas Apolinario Jr. said that Peter delos Santos, the 52-year-old chairman of Bgy. Mabuhay in Bansud town, his wife Ruth, 50, and neighbor Rocky Boy Bueta, 40, the chief of the local barangay security force, were released unharmed by the rebels at 6 a.m. on Friday.

Heavily-armed NPA rebels seized the victims in their house and took the  village chief’s licensed cal. .45 pistol before forcing them to walk towards Sitio Pay-Pay Ama, which was about two hours away from the barangay.

The abduction took place hours after the gunmen threatened to harm the re-electionist mayor if he would fail to pay for a “Permit-to-Campaign Fee.”
