QUEZON, Nueva Ecija -- Three suspected ranking members of the New People's Army on Tuesday were killed in this town in a brief firefight with government forces trying to serve arrest warrants for murder and rebellion.
Killed was Nicomedes Ortiz, also known as “Ka Bunso, Ka Peter and Ka Dagohoy,” a finance officer of Kilusang Larangang Gerilya Sierra Madre SPARU Unit.
Police are verifying the identities of Ortiz’ two other slain comrades.
Provincial police head Col. Leon Victor Rosete said the 10-minute gunbattle occurred in Bgy. San Alejandro at 5:40 p.m. on Tuesday.
Rosete said his men and Army units were trying to implement arrest warrants issued by various courts in Nueva Vizcaya, Baler, Aurora and San Jose City against Ortiz when the three rebels suddenly fired at the operatives, triggering the gunfight.
Recovered at the clash site were a carbine rifle, a cal. 45 pistol, a cal. 9mm and a hand grenade.
