NPA leader killed in Butuan

A top finance officer of the New Peoples’ Army (NPA) was killed when he resisted arrest and figured in a shootout with government forces who were serving warrant of arrest against him the other day in Butuan City.

Armed Forces of the Philippines–Eastern Mindanao Command (AFP-Eastmincom) spokesperson LTC Ezra L. Balagtey identified the fatality as Manuel G. Magante alias Jino  and Saldo, finance officer of the Regional Operations Command  and head of Intelligence Special Operations Group of the Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC).

Reports from Eastmincom showed that the incident occurred at around 11 a.m.  on February 5 at Rosales Street, Bgy. 15, San Ignacio, Butuan City.

Accordingly, combined elements of police and military went to the area to serve warrant of arrest for the crime of robbery with homicide against the suspect but the latter resisted arrest and instead fired his gun towards the team.

Government forces and law enforcers managed to return fire killing the rebel leader on the spot.

Recovered from the suspect were  one caliber .45 pistol , one magazine, seven rounds of caliber .45 ammunition, one XLR 200 Honda motorcycle with plate number MO 4686, one Nokia cellphone and one Lenovo laptop.

Record showed that Magante was involved in numerous violent atrocities targeting military personnel and civilians.

The rebel leader was involved in the murder of Datu Ruben Labawan in 2015; abduction of Jail Warden Coquilla of Compostela in 2015; abduction and murder of Loreto, Agusan del Sur Mayor Dario O. Otaza and his son Darryl O. Otaza in Butuan City last 2015; disarming of the Peace & Order personnel of Bgy. Mahungcog, Magpet in 2016 and burning heavy equipment of a construction company in Barangay Callawa, Davao City in 2018.
