NPA rebels slay ‘tanod’

SUSPECTED New People’s Army guerrillas shot dead a 57-year old barangay ‘tanod’ in Guilhungan City in Negros Oriental as he was reading the Holy Bible at the porch of his house 10 a.m. yesterday, police said.

About three suspected leftist gunmen who were in their early 20s fled on foot after killing Ever Pelenio, a ‘tanod’ of Bgy. T-Hill in Guilhungan City in his residence in Sitio Kanda-islan, said a report to Police Regional Office 7 director, Brigadier General Debold M. Sinas.

An investigation showed that the victim was reading the Bible when shot without any provocation by the suspects who were armed with caliber .45 pistols. The victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Guilhungan Hospital as a result of gunshot wounds in the body.

Sinas said that investigators recovered two spent .45 cartridges at the scene of the attack. The motive behind the incident is still being investigated although there were suspicions that the suspects were members of the dreaded NPA Special Partisan Unit or SPARU, he added.
