THE Police Regional Office 5 yesterday identified members of the New People’s Army’s Special Partisan Unit or SPARU as the motorcycle-riding men who assaulted two policemen about to accost them in Masbate City last Friday triggering a gunbattle that left one of the suspects dead.

PRO5 director, Brigadier General Anthony S. Alcañeses said one of the suspects in the shooting incident in Barangay Banahao in Dimasalang, Masbate was killed while a second managed to escape and is still being hunted.

The driver of their getaway motorcycle identified as 26-year old Nathaniel Colon Jr., a ‘kagawad’ of nearby Bgy. San Antonio was arrested and charged with frustrated murder before a local prosecutor’s office last Saturday.

According to Alcañeses, the two suspects were on board a motorcycle being driven by Colon when they fired at officers manning a checkpoint in Bgy. Banahao around 1:30 p.m. last Friday.

As a result, Corporal Noriel Fabon,33, a member of the Dimasalang Municipal Police Station  and Patrolman Julian Loria,26,  a member of the Masbate City 2nd Provincial Mobile Force Company sent to augment the Dimasalang police force were wounded in the gun attack.

Alcañeses said that other officers led by Captain Reneir Teofilo returned fire killing the still unidentified suspect who shot the two policemen with his caliber .45 pistol.

The Bicol police director said that early morning last Saturday, the slain gunman’s body was claimed by his purported mother Virgie Villanueva,49, a widow-farmer from Bgy. Tubog, Pio V. Corpuz municipality who was accompanied by local barangay officials when she went to the Dimasalang police station.
