SEPARATE anti-narcotics operations conducted by agents of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency on Friday and Saturday resulted in the confiscation of over P100 million worth of shabu and marijuana in the countryside, PDEA chair, Director General Wilkins M. Villanueva announced yesterday.
Villanueva said 12 kilograms of the so-called ‘poor man’s cocaine’ worth P81.6 million were found during a random inspection of cargoes and other packages at the J & T regional hub in Mandaue City in Cebu 3 p.m. Saturday.
The official said members of the PDEA Regional Office 7’s K-9 Team were conducting a paneling and sweeping of the J & T cargoes when the team detected the presence of three black boxes of supposed LED spotlights with suspicious content.
Villanueva said the officers decided to subject the three boxes to an x-ray examination at the Cebu City Pier 3 which has a modern x-ray equipment. The examination showed that the boxes contained organic substance contrary to the declared cargo contents prompting the PDEA team to open them for a thorough inspection.
The PDEA chief said when opened, the boxes yielded 12 vacuum-sealed tea bags sealed with black rubber which turned out to be containing shabu when subjected to a field test.
Villanueva said follow-up operations are still underway to identify the shipper and recipient of the confiscated drugs. The suspects will be facing non-bailable charges for smuggling of drugs under Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
In Lanao del Sur, a joint PDEA Lanao del Sur Provincial Office and PDEA Region 4-A buy-bust operation around 4:30 p.m. last Friday resulted in the arrest of four male drug traffickers and the seizure of two kilos of shabu worth P13.6 million, Villanueva said.
He identified the arrested suspects as Charley Talib, a 31-year-old businessman, and Michael Gamuranao,31, a tricycle driver, both residents of Barangay Macao, Balabagan, Lanao del Sur, and Aldasir Bakundo,31, and Radal Naming,46, both fishermen from Bgy. Sta. Barbara, Zamboanga City.
The PDEA chief said that a minor companion of the suspects was rescued during the sting in Bgy. Bago Ingud in Malabang municipality which was conducted by his men with the support of officers from the Marine Battalion Landing Team 5 of the Philippine Navy, the Malabang Municipal Police Staiton and the Lanao del Sur Police Provincial Office.
The arrest of the suspects came following weeks of monitoring and surveillance operations, he added.
Recovered from the possession of the suspects were two green plastic cellophanes with ‘Guanyinwang Refined Chinese Tea’ markings found to be containing a total of 2,091.4 grams of shabu valued at P13.6 million, the buy-bust money, four mobile phones and a motorcycle.
In Tanjay City in Negros Oriental, combined agents of the PDEA and the local police arrested Kathernine Manso, a 44-year old resident of Bgy. 7 Lawton after she sold drugs to a poseur around 7:15 p.m. last Friday.
