THE Philippine Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) yesterday warned that prolonged and heavy rainfall brought by Tropical Depression ‘Amang’ may cause excessive erosion of pyroclastic deposits in the upper slopes of Bulusan Volcano, which can trigger lahar flows in rivers.
Phivolcs, in its advisory added that potential lahar flows can threaten downstream communities along the Malunoy (Patag), Mapaso, Cadac-an, Tinampo and Cogon Rivers in Irosin and the Añog-Rangas River in Juban.
Entry into the four kilometer-radius Permanent Danger Zone should be avoided due to the possibility of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruption, rockfall, landslide, and lahars, Phivolcs added in its advisory.
The atmospheric administration thus warned residents neaar the Volcano to be vigilant and readyfor lahar flows.
PHIVOLCS is closely monitoring Bulusan Volcano’s condition and any new development will be relayed to all concerned. generate steam driven or phreatic eruptions. The local government units and the public are reminded to avoid entry.
Meanwhile, Kanlaon Volcano’s seismic monitoring network recorded two volcanic earthquakes during the past 24 hours.
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) emission was measured at an average of 147 tons/day on January 16, 2019.
Alert Level 1 or abnormal status prevails over Kanlaon Volcano, which means that it is currently in a state of unrest probably driven by hydrothermal processes that could generate steam driven or phreatic eruptions.
“The local government units and the public are reminded to avoid entry into the four-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) due to perennial hazards of rockfalls, avalanches, sudden outgassing and steam-driven or phreatic eruption at the summit area.
Civil aviation authorities must also advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano’s summit as ejecta from any sudden phreatic eruption can be hazardous to aircraft.
