Protesters turn violent, damage police facilities

February 26, 2019

AROUND 70 left-leaning protesters turned violent during their rally in front of the Police Regional Office 7 headquarters in Cebu City and tried to force their way inside the camp, in the process damaging some police properties as officers tried to restrain them on Monday morning, officials said.

The incident occurred shortly after the members of Karapatan, Anak-Bayan, Bayan Muna, Gabriela, Kilusang Mayo Uno, Anak-Pawis and PISTON  held a protest rally in front of the PRO7 headquarters in Barangay Sta. Cruz, Cebu City before 10 a.m.

Cebu City Police Office director, Senior Superintendent Royina Marzan said that the protesters parked their service vehicles in front of the PRO7 gate thus blocking the entry and exit of police vehicles.

At 10:30 in the morning, around 20 of the protesters then pushed the main gate and its boom in an effort to force their way inside the camp.

As a result, the gate boom was damaged after part of it was cut while the bolt of the main gate was deformed.

Some of the demonstrators also destroyed the PRO7 tarpaulin posted  beside the PRO7 gate.

Marzan said that PRO7 policemen managed to peacefully disperse the protesters who moved away from the camp and marched their way towards downtown Cebu.

BAYAN in a statement scored the PRO7 for allegedly attempting to silence their effort to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of the People Power Revolution. The group claimed that police played loud disco music while they were staging their protest.

PRO7 officials are reviewing the CCTV footage in the area to determine who should be held accountable for the incident. Duty sentinels were also asked to explain why they failed to immediately accost the protesters who were already destroying their facilities.

Initially, cases for malicious mischief will be filed against the identified protest rally leaders, said Marzan.
