LUCENA City -- A suspected notorious pusher was nearly killed after he engaged policemen, who were about to arrest him, in a shootout during a drug buy-bust operation in Purok San Roque, Bgy. 4, here, at dawn yesterday.
Quezon police director Senior Supt. Osmundo de Guzman identified the arrested suspect as Ruel Ramirez Mendoza, 32, painter, of said place.
De Guzman said Mendoza is included on the drugs watchlist of the city police and has been under tight watch.
City police director Supt. Romulo Albacea said the operation was carried out by City Drug Enforcement Unit (CDEU) operatives, together with personnel from Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit (PDEU) and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA)- Quezon.
During the drug bust, Albacea said PO3 Ritchie Yuayan, who acted as poseur-buyer, was able to buy a small heat-sealed plastic sachet containing 0.5 gram of suspected shabu in exchange for a marked P500 bill from Mendoza at around 5 a.m.
“At that point, Yuayan introduced himself as a policeman and was about to arrest Mendoza but the latter pushed him and pulled out a revolver,” said Albacea.
Luckily, Albacea said the gun jammed when the suspect pulled its trigger while running away.
He said Yuayan and PO3 Christian Magillano chased the suspect until they reached Purok Paraiso where the latter was hit by a bullet in the buttocks when shot by Magillano.
Albacea said the wounded suspect was rushed to Quezon Medical Center where he is now confined.
Police recovered the loaded cal. .38 revolver and the marked money.
The suspect will be charged with violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 or RA 9165.
