SAN ANTONIO, Nueva Ecija -- A retired Philippine Army man cheated death in a robbery-slay attempt perpetrated by two unidentified motorcycle-riding men who held them up at gunpoint on their way home here on Friday night.
Chief Insp. Marlon D. Cudal, town police head identified the wounded retired Army soldier as Jose Sales, 60, who sustained two gunshot wounds after being shot twice in the abdomen.
Cudal said Jose’s wife, Susan, 57, their son and granddaughter were unharmed in the incident which transpired at 8 p.m. in Bgy. San Mariano.
Carted away by the two armed suspects was Susan’s sling bag containing their sales for the day totalling P20,000.
Initial investigation showed that the couple and their companions, who are residents of Bgy. Julo were riding a red Honda motorcycle with attached skeletal sidecar (kolong-kolong) when the incident occurred.
They were traversing the Lawang Kupang-San Mariano Road when upon reaching the steel bridge in the area, the suspects who were riding-in-tandem in a black Kawasaki Bajaj motorcycle suddenly blocked their path and at gunpoint declared a hold-up.
One of the suspects, who was wielding a Cal. 45 pistol, then shot the former soldier twice in the abdomen before his cohort grabbed the woman’s sling bag and hurriedly fled towards the direction of Bgy. Lawang Kupang.
Cudal said the ex-military man was rushed to the Gonzales Gen. Hospital in San Leonardo town where he is now declared in stable condition.
Cudal said they are still conducting follow-up investigation for possible identification and arrest of the suspects.
