Separate Ecija gun attacks leave bgy chief, tanod dead

CABANATUAN CITY -- A barangay captain was waylaid in Talavera town while a barangay tanod suffered the same fate in San Leonardo in two murder incidents that occurred in Nueva Ecija last Sunday night and early yesterday morning.

In Talavera, police head Lt. Col. Alexie Desamito identified the slain barangay captain as Arniel Bernardo, 61, of Purok 4, Bgy. San Ricardo.

He was peppered with bullets upon reaching the gate of his house while riding a bicycle at 10:40 p.m. Sunday.

Desamito said the unidentified suspects immediately fled towards the direction of Llanera town.

She said they are still determining the possible motive for the killing.

In San Leonardo, Police Maj. Jeffrey Alivia, town police head, identified the slain victim as barangay tanod Rodrigo Cruz, 54, of Bgy. Tabuating, a native of Ayala Heights, Quezon City.

Alivia said the gun attack transpired at Purok 3, Bgy. Tabuating at 1:30 a.m. yesterday while the victim was walking down the road accompanied by Saint Anthony Redrico, 37, a chicken dealer.

Two unidentified bonnet-wearing armed men on board a black Toyota Vios sedan brandishing long and short firearms shot him in the head, chest and arms causing his instantaneous death. Redrico was unharmed.

After the shooting, Alivia said the suspects fled towards Gapan City.

Probers recovered from the crime scene four empty shells for a cal. 45 pistol and a spent shell of cal. 5.56.

Alivia said the sworn statements of Redrico and the victim’s live-in partner were already taken to determine the possible motive for the killing.

He said they also took the mobile phone of Redrico for any clues that could help in the probe.
