A soldier was killed in an encounter with an armed group in Zamboanga del Norte, according to Philippine Army's 102nd Infantry Brigade Colonel Bagnus Gaerlan.

Gaerlan, who did not identify the slain soldier, said joint forces from the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police clashed with an undetermined number of armed lawless elements in Sibuco, Zamboanga del Norte.

The clash erupted following the arrest of a certain Basiran Ahil Mudja for murder and attempted murder cases.

“Pursuit operation has been conducted to arrest and neutralize the armed group who also suffered casualties based on the bloodstains left in the encounter site,” Gaerlan said.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends of our hero soldier. He died protecting the community in pursuit of peace and prosperity,” he added.
