Soldiers die, scores hurt in Jolo blasts

AT least six soldiers  and 5 civilians were killed while scored were wounded in two explosions yesterday afternoon in Jolo, Sulu.

This was confirmed by Major Corleto Vinluan Jr.  commander of AFP- Western Mindanano Command (Westmincom).

Reports reaching Camp Aguinaldo showed that the first explosion occurred at around 12:00 pm  in  front of Paradise Grocery Store near SYNTAX computer shop in Jolo, Sulu.

The incident resulted in the killing of soldiers who were patrolling in the area.

According to Lt. Colonel  Ronaldo Mateo spokesperson of 11th Infantry Division of Philippine Army, the explosion was triggered by an  improvised explosive device (IED) was  attached to a motorcycle  that was parked in the area.

The second explosion was recorded at around 1 p.m. in front of  the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) .

As of press time the area was placed under lock down to be able to arrest the suspect behind the bombings.

In line with this, PNP Chief General Archie Gamboa ordered PRO BAR Chief Police Brig. Gen. Manuel Abu  to secure the place.

Authorities are not discounting the possibilities that the bombings are perpetrated by suspected members of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).
