ARAYAT, Pampanga – A columnist and his companion on Sunday night were killed in an ambush by armed men in Bgy. Cacutud, this town.
Arayat police chief Lt. Col. Dale Soliba identified the victims as Remate columnist Jupiter Gonzales, a 52-year-old resident of Sampaloc, Manila, and companion Christopher Tiongson.
The two victims were in a Nissan Almera traveling towards San Fernando-Olongapo-Gapan Road, with Gonzales at the driver’s seat, and Tiongson at the front passenger seat when shot by the suspects in Bgy. Cacutud around 10:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Tiongson died on the spot while Gonzales was rushed to the Arayat District Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.
Police are looking for a “person of interest” but refused to give further details, saying it might jeopardize their investigation.
The Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) condemned the attack on Gonzales.
“The PTFoMS presumes any form of media violence as work-related until further investigation proves otherwise. The Task Force is on top of the situation and is closely coordinating with the authorities regarding this incident and follow-up investigations are being closely monitored,” said the statement from the Task Force.
Reports said Gonzales was a staunch critic of peryahan and illegal gambling in the province.
