A TOP drug trafficker in Mindanao was killed in a shootout with officers out to arrest him in Cagayan de Oro City late evening Friday, Police Regional Office 9 director, Brigadier General Jesus D. Cambay Jr. announced yesterday.
In a report to Philippine National Police chief, General Archie Francisco F. Gamboa, the official identified the slain suspect as Mayong Ilang Kamlaon, a resident of Barangay Talon-Talon, Zamboanga City who has been tagged as the Top 3 drug target in Western Mindanao.
Cambay said the suspect was about to be arrested in his hiding place in Barangay Bulua in Cagayan de Oro City at 11 p.m. Friday when he engaged officers in a shootout and was killed in the process.
Recovered from the slain suspect’s possession were one hand grenade, a chamber-loaded caliber .45 semi-automatic pistol with a magazine containing a live ammunition and a sling bag with a loaded magazine, the official said.
Cambay said the gunbattle erupted while members of the Zamboanga City Police Office, the Regional Intelligence Unit 9 and Regional Intelligence Division 9, with the support of the PRO10 went to arrest the suspect on the strength of a warrant for violation of Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 issued by the Zamboanga City Regional Trial Court Branch 9.
“Our men were forced to return fire at the heavily-armed suspect who is considered as a Level 2 high-value individual working for a Zamboanga City drug group,” said the PRO9 director.
