Tribal leader tortured, killed

BANSUD, Oriental Mindoro -- A tribal leader was found dead at Sitio Liberty, Barangay Naibuan, San Jose, Occidental Mindoro Friday.

The victim was identified as Jose Barera, a former member of Sangay ng Partido sa Lokalidad (SPL), an underground organization of CPP-NPA-NDF.

According to Lt Col.  Alexander Arbolado, commander of 4th Infantry Battalion, Barera surrendered to government troops on August 10, 2018 and decided to live a normal life. He is also one of the 43 former rebels who received benefits from the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program (ECLIP).

The body of the victim was found alongside the Tumalo River, at Barangay Benli, Bulalacao, Oriental Mindoro and was identified by his brother, Boy Barera.

According to his family, Barera was kidnapped from their house by members of the NPA belonging to Kilusang Larangang Gerilya–Silangan (KLG Silangan) led by Rosita Serrano of the Sub-Regional Military Area–4D who operate in Southern Mindoro.

It was learned that Barera was a known supporter of Congresswoman Josephine Sato and Governor Mario Gene Mendiola, who are actively provide help to the Mangyan Community.

According to his brother, the victim was tortured due to his defiance to support candidates favored by the NPAs and for and wanting to live a normal life.

The Hanunuo Tribe and people of San Jose strongly condemned Barera’s killing by the hands of CPP-NPA Terrorists (CNTs).
