GOVERNMENT forces foiled what could have been another deadly attack by New Peoples Army (NPA) following the discovery of two landmines they planted the other day in Maco, Compostela Valley.
This was confirmed by Lt. Col. Ezra Balagtey, spokesman of Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Eastern Mindanao Command (Eastmincom).
Balagtey said troops prevented the landmine attack thru the help of communities who provided information regarding the location of the landmines.
Ltc Esteveyn E. Ducusin, commander of 71st Infantry Battalion said, troops recovered seven kilos of landmine and 150 meter trip wire laid along the barangay road at Junction, Sitio Banban, Special Barangay of Manasa, Barangay Anitapan, Mabini, Compostela Valley.
Another group of landmines including three ten kilos and one 15 kilos were recovered in Barangay Magangit, Maco Compostela Valley.
Balagtey said improvised landmine has been an alternative weapon of the rebels to augment their dwindling number of firearms brought about by the significant numbers of firearms being surrendered and captured.
It was learned that for the first quarter, a total of 218 firearms and 69 IHL banned landmine were captured and surrendered in the Eastern Mindanao Command’s whole area of responsibility; most of which were accomplished because of the support and information of the communities.
