‘Eat Pinoy pork, support farmers’.

PALAYAN CITY – Nueva Ecija Gov. Aurelio M. Umali on Tuesday rallied his provincemates to eat “Pinoy pork in support of our farmers” as he led the holding of a “lechon festival” to show that it is safe to eat pork amid threats of the dreaded African swine flu.

During the lechon festival, the entire lobby of the ground floor of the provincial capitol building here was converted into an instant eating ground for a boodle fight as 36 roasted pigs were served during lunch, courtesy of the Swine Practitioners and Producers Association in Nueva Ecija (SPPANE).

Joining the governor in the boodle fight were his brother Vice Gov. Emmanuel Antonio M. Umali, Col. Leon Victor Z. Rosete, provincial police director, SPPANE president Dr. Jayson De Guzman, provincial administrator Atty. Alejandro Abesamis, and other capitol and barangay officials, including department heads and employees.

“Di po natin ilalagay sa kapahamakan ang ating mga kalalawigan,” said Umali, in showing off through the said boodle fight that pork meat is safe to eat in the province.

“Patunay po ito na ligtas po kainin ang ating mga baboy sa lalawigan, may mga isolated cases lang na ni-report ang Department of Agriculture, pero safe po ang ating baboy,” said the governor, who was clad in a white t-shirt with imprinted words, “Eat Pinoy Pork, Support Our Farmers.”

Vice Gov. Umali, for his part advised local consumers to only buy pork and other meat products from known sources such as accredited stores and supermarkets.

Dr. De Guzman said his group partnered with the provincial government in spearheading the event to show that it is safe to eat pork amid the ASF scare, noting that the reports about alleged ASF-affected cases in a certain area in the province were mere speculations and not yet confirmed by laboratory tests.
