A WANTED rape suspect who reportedly had told neighbors he won’t be taken alive was killed in a shootout with policemen out to arrest him in his hideout in Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte late night Wednesday, Police Regional Office 10 director, Brigadier General Rolando B. Anduyan said yesterday.
Suspect Demetrio Fuentes, the subject of a non-bailable warrant of arrest for rape in relation to Republic Act 7610 or the anti-child abuse law issued by Judge Alberto Quinto of the Kapatagan Regional Trial Court Branch 21, reportedly opened fire at policemen approaching his hiding place in Purok 5, Barangay Butadon around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday prompting officers to retaliate, the official said.
The shootout erupted shortly after members of the Kapatagan Municipal Police Station headed by Major Rodolfo Dongiapon alighted from their mobile car, the headlights illuminating the area where the suspect was positioned, around three meters away from where the policemen were.
Immediately, the suspect who was armed with a caliber .38 revolver fired shots at Master Sergeant Geoffrey Paglinawan who managed to drop to the ground to avoid being hit. In return, Maj. Dongiapon shot the suspect in the body.
The wanted man died while being taken to the Kapatagan Provincial Hospital.
Recovered from the slain suspect’s possession were a cal. .38 revolver with three live ammunition and two spent casings in its cylinder, four heat-sealed plastic sachets containing suspected shabu and some drug paraphernalia.
