A WANTED terror suspect in Mindanao was captured in a Philippine National Police Intelligence Group (PNP-IG)-led operation in Zamboanga City Saturday morning, a report to PNP chief, General Archie Francisco F. Gamboa said yesterday.
Adu Jamiri Masbud Hakim alias ‘Kulot,’ a known member of the Daulah Islamiyah terror group, was tracked down to his hiding place in Phase 4, Block 14, Barangay Kasanyangan, Zamboanga City past 11 a.m. Saturday by members of the Regional Intelligence Unit 9, the Zamboanga City Police Office, the Sulu Police Provincial Office and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, said PNP-IG director Brigadier General Edgar S. Monsalve.
According to Monsalve, the suspect is a former member of an Abu Sayyaf faction headed by the late Alhabsy Misayah until he and some of his colleagues shifted allegiance to the Daulah Islamiyah headed by Bonyamin Sawadjaan alias “Abu Marwan.” The radical group gained notoriety for their involvement in the infamous Marawi City siege in 2017.
The PNP-IG director said they have received information that the suspect has linked up with his comrades from Sulu province to organize a new Daulah Islamiyah cell in Zamboanga City. The official added that three of the suspect’s colleagues were arrested in separate counter-terror operations in Sulu and Zamboanga City last month.
Monsalve said the suspect was arrested based on a warrant of arrest for arson issued by Judge Betlee-Ian Barraquias of the Jolo, Sulu Regional Trial Court Branch 4 on January 19, 2017. No bail was recommended for the suspect’s temporary liberty.
Hakim is also wanted in the burning of several civilian houses in two villages in Omar, Basilan in 2013.
Monsalve said the suspect yielded nine heat-sealed plastic sachets containing suspected shabu and two mobile phones.
The suspect is now being held at the Zamboanga City Police Station 6.
