Aces deck Elite

February 13, 2019

AFTER dropping its first game in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup, Alaska Milk is back in the groove.

The Aces turned to Chris Banchero and Sonny Thoss to roll back Blackwater , 103-101, and clinch its second straight win before a big crowd at  the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Back-to-back baskets by Banchero and Thoss, couled with a costly turnopver by Allein Maliksi, all but wrapped up the win for the Aces.

Maliksi himself tied the score for the last time at 99-all with 1:16 left, before BAnchero countered with a quick jumper to make it 101-99.

Thoss followed  up Banchero’s basket to make it 103-99.

With the loss, Blackwater dropped to 1-6.

Jeron Teng and Carl Bryan Cruz led Alaska with 18 points apiece, while Thoss added 16.

Chris Exciminiano had 14 points and Banchero had 11 points for the  Alex Compton-mentored Aces.

Maliksi carried  the  fight for the Elite with 25 points, followed by Roi Sumang with 18.

Actually,  Abu Tratter had just put  the Elite  to within 30-31 when the Aces unloaded a scorching offensive ignited by Jake Pascual’s layup  that put  them ahead by 10, 40-30, with 6:56 left in the second quarter.

The Aces kept their double-digit advantage well into the last four minutes of the second period, with Cruz triple giving Alaska a 46-36 lead.

The Aces’ offense, however, went in tatters after that – a situation which the Elite took advantage to the hilt.

Worse, Compton was seen entering the court that led to a technical.

The Elite on the other hand focused on their business, and with Allein Maliksi, Raymar Jose, Roi Sumang and Mike Cortez at the firing end, they were  able to narrow the gap once more at the turn, 49-48, after outscoring the Aces, 11-3.

The Aces had four triples right in the first quarter courtesy of Carl Bryan Cruz, Jerone Teng, Chris Banchero and MJ Ayaay, but they still they could not seem to pull away because the Elite were simply quick in making retaliations.

Back-to-back baskets by Exciminiano gave the Aces a 29-23 lead late in the  opening quarter, but Mac Belo’s follow-up shot coupled with Jio Alolino’s triple that barely beat the buzzer to keep the score close, 29-28, at the end of the same period.

The scores:
