ALASKA relied on a first quarter breakaway to repulse Blackwater, 101-91, keeping its playoff hopes alive in the PBA Governors’ Cup on Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Franko House, Abu Tratter, Jerone Teng and Vic Manuel took care of the scoring chores for the Aces all gamelong as Alaska chalked up its second straight win following its 78-71 spanking of Rain or Shine last Oct. 13.
House tallied 18 points and 11 rebounds, Teng banged away 19 points and grabbed eight rebounds, Tratter added 18 points and six rebounds while Manuel chipped in 12 points and five rebounds.
For taking the must-win game, the Aces are now in a three-way tie with Phoenix Pulse and Blackwater for 10th to 12th places. They need to win their last three outings for a possible spot in the eight-team quarterfinal round.
“Doon ako medyo proud with the fact that guys are continuing to come in each and every game focused, engaged, and inspired,” said Alaska coach Jeffrey Cariaso.
“Despite our record, they still came out and really gave their best and slowly looking like the team we are kinda expecting,” added Cariaso.
Marqus Blakely cut loose with 19 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, while four locals also finished in double figures but could prevent the Elite from reeling to their third straight setback.
KG Canaleta was easily the most consistent among the Blackwater locals after finishing with 18 points and four rebounds, with Mac Belo and Bobby Ray Parks chipping in 14 points each, and Paul Desiderio 11 points and four rebounds.
Teng was at his best in the second quarter as he scored nine points and helped the Aces build a 60-36 lead at the turn.
Traded during the offseason to the Aces from the Elite, Tratter immediately made his presence felt with 10 points in the first period, making it a 29-19 lead for his new team after the quarter.
Alaska averted a rally by the Blackwater, which cut the deficit to nine, 84-75, entering the fourth with crucial scores by Teng in the fourth of the Petron Saturday Special match.
