MOVE over, Hanamichi Sakuragi.
Bren Park is coming.
“Barangay 143”, the first-ever sports-themed anime on local television, will hit the air over GMA 7 starting 10 a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 21.
Benjie Paras, the only PBA player to win both Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player honors in 1989, will lend his voice to the series, which is inspired by the highly-popular Japanese manga series ‘Slamdunk’ that introduced Hanamichi Sakuragi to loxal basketball fans.
This is our labor of love. Barangay 143 is finally going to be on TV in the Philippines. It's been exciting to work with some of the best talent the world of animation has to offer and I am looking forward to the fruits of our hard work being on GMA,” said Jackeline Chua, managing director of Synergy 88 Entertainment Media Inc.
“Barangay 143 is everything that I've seen and experienced of the Philippines so far. It’s people who readily share their love, millions who go about life with a smile, and above all, basketball, the pulse of this country. I think people not just here but worldwide, would love this show,” said Jyotirmoy Saha, CEO of August Media Holdings.
The cast of “Barangay 143” includes Julie Anne San Jose, Migo Adecer, Ruru Madrid, and Kelley Day along with veteran actors John Arcilla, Edu Manzano, Lorna Tolentino and Cherie Gil.
The series will also feature the voices of Alice Dixson, Teresa Loyzaga, Raver Eda, Pen Medina, Archie Alemania, Ping Medina, Jerald Napoles, Roadfil Macasero, Kimpoy Feliciano, and PBA player Doug Kramer, wife Cheska, and their children Kendra and Scarlet.
‘Barangay 143’ tells the story of Bren Park (Adecer), a rising basketball star in Korea, who turned his back on everything after a major event changed his life.
The search for answers leads Bren to Manila where he goes to live with his former yaya Tita Baby (Tolentino), in the gritty neighborhood of Barangay 143 in Tondo.
It is here that Bren finds a whole new family who teaches him how to live and love once again.
Coach B ( Arcilla), the coach of Barangay 143’s Puzakals basketball team, is quick to spot Bren’s talent and is determined to bring him back to basketball, while Vicky (San Jose), the team manager and the coach’s daughter, and Wax (Madrid), the star player of a rival basketball team, are not quite in favor.
Barangay 143 is a co-production of Synergy 88 Entertainment Media Inc. (Philippines) together with August Media Holdings (Singapore), TV Asahi (Japan) and ASI Animation Studio.
Synergy88 Entertainment Media Inc. is also one of the media partners of the Metro League Open basketball tournament of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
