WITH June Mar Fajardo slowly but surely getting back into shape, San Miguel Beer looks to further boost its chances when it takes on unpredictable NorthPort in the PBA Governors Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.
Buoyed by back-to-back wins over Phoenix (117-100) and Talk N Text (107-96), the Beermen are raring to chalk up their third straight win and win No. 5 overall in their 7 p.m. encounter with the Batang Pier.
“We have a good chance. Maganda naman ang nilalaro namin kahit wala pa si June Mar ngayon,” said San Miguel Coach Leo Austria.
Austria said there is no exact date as to when Fajardo will play, but hopes to get him back once the playoffs begin.
“There’s no exact date on June Mar’s return but we’re hoping he can play once we get into the playoffs,” said Austria.
But first, Austria hopes to win their last three assignments against NorthPort, Rain or Shine and Meralco.
In Fejardo’s absence, San Miguel leans heavily on Fil-German Christian Standhardinger, who averages 25.8 points, 11.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in the season-ending tournament.
It will be a must-win situation for Batang Pier and Coach Pido Jarencio.
At 2-7, the Batang Pier need to sweep their last two games to earn a playoff.
Phoenix also guns for a much-needed win against back-to-the-wall Rain or Shine in the 4:30 p.m. curtainraiser.
The Fuel Masters hope to continue to get big games from import Eugene Phelps, Calvin Abueva, Jason Perkins, Matthew Wright and RJ Jazul to move up to solo fourth place .
