Bullpups too strong for Baby Maroons

February 02, 2020

NAZARETH School of National University moved on the cusp of clinching an outright Finals berth with an expected rout of UP Integrated School, 113-76, in the UAAP juniors basketball tournament yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The Bullpups have now won 13 in a row and are looking good for another trip to the league’s biggest stage.

Standing in the way of the defending champions’ automatic advance into the final is second-running Far Eastern University-Diliman, which primed itself up for Wednesday showdown with NSNU with an 81-73 win over University of Santo Tomas.

“Kung makakapag-sweep, okay, pero kami naman, kung anong game lang yung nasa harap, doon lang kami naka-focus,” said Bullpups coach Goldwin Monteverde. “Pero kung makaka-sweep, hopefully, ganoon mangyari.”

Five NSNU players scored in double-digits led by Steve Nash Enriquez and Terrence Fortea who had 17 points apiece.

Gerry Abadiano added 12 points and six rebounds while the Bullpups’ big boys Kevin Quiambao and Carl Tamayo were at their usual dominant form with combined 20 points and 17 rebounds.

In other games, Ateneo rode on a telling 37-0 first half run to overpower La Salle-Zobel, 79-52, and claim the third semifinals berth, while Adamson was just as impressive in its 124-68 spanking of University of the East to seize fourth place.

The Blue Eaglets, who rose to 8-5 in third spot, turned an early 3-14 deficit to a 40-14 advantage in the second quarter that left the Junior Archers in shambles.

The Baby Falcons, behind John Erolon’s on-27 points, opened a one-game cushion over the Tiger Cubs with a 7-6 card.

UST (6-7) must hurdle La Salle-Zobel on Wednesday and hope that Adamson loses its final elimination round assignment to Ateneo to force a playoff for the No. 4 spot.
