CHIANG Kai Shek College  added another feather to its cap by winning the first Tanduay Athletics-Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association (MMTLBA) Alumni 40 years old and above tournament. 

Led by Rodel Ng, Chiang Kai Shek brought down St. Stephen High School,  67-60, to capture the championship at the CKSC gym in Manila last Monday. 

Ng finished with 19 points on 5-of-7 shooting and three other mainstays also scored in double figures for  Chiang Kai Shek, which led by as  many as 17 points before  holding off a late rally by St. Stephen. 

Ng added a team-high eight rebounds in less than 29 minutes coming off the bench for Chiang Kai Shek, which was handled by acting coach Calvin Li in the absence of head coach Arsenio Dysangco. 

Brian Ngo added 13 points and Kim Ho Hui and Edbing Santos contributed 11 points apiece for Chiang Kai Shek,  which outscored St. Stephen,  30-17, in the second quarter to turn the game around. 

Lawrence Ngo finished with 17 points and six rebounds, Patterson Ngo added 13 points, five rebounds and five assists and Alain Andres had 12 points and four rebounds for St. Stephen. 

Overall,  Chiang Kai Shek finished with a 9-1 win-loss record,  including a decisive 76-54 triumph over Jubilee Christian Academy in the crossover semis last Feb. 8. 

Interestingly,  Chiang Kai Shek’s lone defeat came at the hands of St. Stephen, 55-72,  last Jan. 25. 

Chiang Kai Shek opened up as many as 17-point lead,  46-29, on a layup by Kim with 8:46 left in the third quarter. 

But eight straight points by St. Stephen in a two-minute span -- four by Ngo -- made it 37-46. 

The closest St. Stephen got from there, however,  was six points,  56-62, on a split by Andres entering the final three minutes. 

St. Stephen, which earned the right to meet Chiang Kai Shek by beating No. 2 Xavier School in the semis,  settled for runner-up honor. 

Actually,  Chiang Kai Shek made 25 of 57 shots for 43 percent against St. Stephen's  19 of 51 shooting for 37 percent. 

Chiang Kai Shek had more assists in the game,  18-7, but St. Stephen had more rebounds, 38-34. 

The other members of Chiang Kai Shek were Lincoln Lim,  Gilbert Chan, Eric Ang, John Christopher Chua, Sunny King,  Patrick Phi, Gary Gan,  Daniel Dagdag,  Paul Austria, Mark Lawrence Tan, Jeffrey Yu, Ronnie Ong,  Reynaldo Deloso,  Kerwin Mas,  Kerwan Mas and Li.. 

Other teams which participated in the tournament are Grace Christian College, Uno High School, St. Jude Catholic School,  St. Peter Apostle School and Philippine Cultural College.

The MMTLBA  is headed by Christian Tan. 

Operations head is Johnny Tam, while commissioners are Horacio Lim and Roger Sia.
