Dragons stay hot
SEVEN wins and counting for Diliman College.
Diliman College routed St. Joseph College-Bulacan, 120-67, to assure itself of at least a playoff for a semifinal berth in the Universities and Colleges Basketball League (UCBL) at the Olivarez College gym in Parañaque City.
MJ Enriquez topscored with 19 points and five other players scored in double figures for the Quezon City-based Blue Dragons, who moved into a two-way tie for the top spot with Centro Escolar University with identical 7-1 win-loss records.
Kevin Gandjeto, a prized find from Benin, also produced monster numbers for the Rensy Bajar-coached Blue Dragons, who jumped to an early 30-7 advantage and were never seriously threatened enroute to another lopsided victory.
Gandjeto added 18 points, 14 rebounds, four steals, three blocks and two assists for Diliman.
“Hindi ko muna iniisip yun semifinals at twice-to-beat advnatage. We have four games to go. We just take it one game at a time,” said Bajar, who is widely credited for Diliman’s meteoric rise as one of the country’s top collegiate teams.
“But I like our chances now. I hope the boys will continue to play well and keep their focus,” added Bajar, also the first assistant coach of PBA legend Pido Jarencio in NorthPort Batang Pier.
Bajar shared the team’s success to Diliman College president and former Sen. Nikki Coseteng and team sponsors Jerome Ngo and Wilson Sia of Gerry’s Grill.
Up next for Diliman is Technological Institute of the Philippines, which is running third with 5-2 slate, on Monday.
TIP downed Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas, 71-54.
