LAST year, Columbian Dyip swept all their three games against Rain or Shine.
Columbian coach Johnedel Cardel was visibly relieved to win a fourth -- and more important -- one against Rain or Shine last night.
Even if they have to work doubly hard this time.
Ranshawn McCarthy finished with 22 points to lead Columbian to a thrilling 85-82 win over Rain or Shine in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The win enabled the Dyip to improve to 4-5.
“Sabi ko nga sa kanila, losing to Blackwater was enough. Tama na yun. We have three more games and we need to win allthree games. We start with this game,” said Cardel after the game.
Cardel was quick to credit McCarthy and his vastly-improved plays to the victory.
McCarthy had six points in a game-changing 10-0 run that allowed the Dyip to take a 55-46 lead in the third period.
The Dyip played hard enough to withstand the E-Painters’ repeated comebacks.
Jackson Corpuz added 12 points and eight rebounds while rookie CJ Perez contributed a double double of 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Dyip, who rebounded from a ego-defalting setback to the Elite.
JP Calvo added eight points and eight assists for Columbian.
Mark Borboran topscored with 21 points for the E-Painters, who have now lost two in a row to fall to 7-3.
James Yap and JV Mocon added 12 points apiece and Ed Daquioag had 10 in a losing effort.
Actually, Rain or Shine managed to tie the score at 73-all, but Corpuz and Perez answered with back-to-back baskets to wrest the upperhand anew.
Corpuz scored on a layup, Calvo added a baseline jumper before Corpuz came through with another shot as the Dyip posted an 83-7 9 cushion.
Reden Celda hit two crucial free throws with 2.3 seconds left for an 85-82 lead and Yap missed a potential game-tying three-point attempt at the end.
Before their four-game winnign streak over the E-Painters, the Dyip actually went 0-9 to the same team in their first three seasons in the league.
