Dyip trip Bolts

February 27, 2019

THANKS to a strong fourth quarter stint sprinkled with some lucky breaks, the Columbian Dyip is now on the go again in the PBA Philippine Cup.

The Dyip turned to Rashawn McCarthy and Bryan Faundo for the big plays and watched the scrambling Bolts run out of gas in the stretch to escape with an 86-85 win in the resumption of the kickoff conference’s elimination on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

McCarthy scored on an undergoal, Faundo followed suit with a difficult drive, before McCarthy delivered a killer three-pointer to give the Dyip an 86-80 lead, with 2:29 minutes remaining.

The Bolts, who were forced to call for a timeout, came to within 86-85 on Chris Newsome’s five straight points including a huge triple. With still 36.9 second remaining, the Dyip pressed the ball so much, wasting a good part of the remaining seconds on the way to preserving the hairline win.

The Dyip have now stopped their three-game slump and climbed to eighth spot with was only their third win in seven outings.

The Bolts on the other hand tumbled to their second straight setback and fourth overall in six games.

The two teams were tied at 66-all entering the fourth, but the Dyip accelerated fast to build a 77-71 lead behind an 11-5 tear highlighted by McCarthy’s triple.

The Dyip still led, 79-75, on Khobuntin’s basket with 6:18 minutes left, when Ranidel de Ocampo clustered in five straight points as Meralco grabbed the lead at 80-79, 5:45 minutes left.

The Bolts started aggressively in both ends of the court, and with Cliff Hodge at the firing end, they were able to build a 20-8 lead late in the opening quarter which ended at 24-11 in their favor.

The complexion of the game dramatically changed in the ensuing second period, and this time it was the Dyip who were wreaking havoc offensively.

Rashawn McCarthy and Andreas Cahilig came through with two triples each, Glenn Khobuntin completed a three-point play while Eric Camson added six points as the Dyip pressed hard on their offense which put them within 38-34, late in the second period.

The Bolts stopped the Dyip’s surge through Chris Newsome, Ranidel De Ocampo and Mike Tolomia to keep themselves up, 45-36, before the Dyip struck for a quick 6-0 roll on a basket each from McCarthy, CJ Perez and Khobuntin to trim the Meralco lead to just 45-42 at the turn.
