Eagles rout Scorpions

CIGNAL-Ateneo bounced back with a 67-52 trampling of Centro Escolar University to take a 2-1 series lead in of the PBA D-League championship series last night at the Ynares Sports Arena.

The Scorpions put up a gallant fight in Game 3, but the Blue Eagles, who had MVP Isaac Go back harness, made sure that there will be no meltdowns this time.

Dave Bernabe completed a three-point play to keep CEU in the game, 33-36, at the 7:22 mark of the third period when  Cignal-Ateneo unloaded a telling 9-0 run capped by Mike Nieto's three free throws for a 45-33 advantage.

Game was momentarily halted at the 8:18 mark of the payoff period due to a leaking ceiling caused by a thunderstorm where the Eagles were very much ahead, 55-37.

Play resumed after 25 minutes, and Cignal-Ateneo continued to pour it on until the final buzzer.

The Eagles go for the jugular in Game 4 slated at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at the same Pasig venue.

Thirdy Ravena led Cignal-Ateneo with 12 points and eight rebounds while Ivorian Ange Kouame added 10 markers, nine blocks and seven boards.

Only Senegelese Malick Diouf scored in twin digits for the Scorpions with 19 points to go with 20 rebounds, as Game 2 hero Jerome Santos was held to five points after dropping 28 in last Tuesday's series-tying victory.

The 6-foot-8 Go received the MVP award prior to the game, averaging 9.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in the conference.

Go’s absence was felt by the Eagles in Game 2. He was under the weather when Cignal-Ateneo suffered a humbling 74-77 loss to CEU.
