Eagles seek 2nd win vs Scorpions

Game today

(Ynares Sports Arena)

4 p.m. – CEU vs Cignal-Ateneo

CIGNAL-Ateneo seeks to reassert its dominance of Centro Escolar University in Game 2 of the PBA D-League championship series today at the Ynares Sports Arena.

The Blue Eagles handily beat the Scorpions, 101-66, in last Thursday’s opener - easily the most lopsided Finals game in the developmental league’s history.

Despite being overwhelming favorites, Cignal-Ateneo knows that overconfidence will lead to its downfall.

“We could not take them for granted because they’re in the Finals for a reason. We just wanted to make sure that we don’t get complacent,” said Eagles deputy coach Sandy Arespacochaga.

Tip-off is at 4 p.m.

CEU was clearly intimidated by fancied Cignal-Ateneo, which is why coach Derrick Pumaren urged his crew to leave everything on the floor to not fall behind in a demoralizing 0-2 hole.

“We just have to believe that we can compete with them. We have to show that heart and fight on Game Two,” said Pumaren.

After a slow start, the Eagles broke the game wide open in the second period to put the fight out of the Scorpions.

That’s why CEU hopes to avoid that trap, with Senegal’s  Malick Diouf hoping to battle Cignal-Ateneo’s Ivorian slotman Ange Kouame in the middle right from the get go, while Rich Guinitaran, Dave Bernabe and Kurt Sunga need  to deliver in order to pull off a reversal.

The Scorpions need to find ways how to neutralize Isaac Go, who led the Eagles in Game 1  with 17 points on a 4-of-6 shooting from the three-point zone. Cignal-Ateneo eventually finished with 16 treys.

Thirdy Ravena, who had 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the opener, will also provide the leadership the Eagles’ need.
