CIGNAL-Ateneo proved too much for Petron-Letran, scoring a one-sided 83-64 win and grabbing solo third place in the Aspirants' Group of the PBA D-League yesterday at the Ynares Sports Arena.
Playing without ace forward Thirdy Ravena, the Blue Eagles drew a good job from BJ Andrade, who waxed hot in the third quarter, firing 10 of his 13 points in that period to turn an one-point halftime deficit to a 63-54 lead and never looked.
Unheralded Matthew Daves just missed out on a double-double of 10 points and nine boards for Cignal-Ateneo, which rose to 4-1.
"Our discipline wasn't good in the first half and that's not the right recipe to play successful basketball," said Eagles coach Tab Baldwin.
"But we sorted some things out, BJ, Mike and Matt (Nieto) hit some shots out and that got us in the right track. We did what we have to do."
Mike Nieto contributed 12 points and two rebounds, and Ivorian slotman Ange Kouame bucked foul trouble to nab 10 points and 11 rebounds for Cignal-Ateneo.
In other games, Clint Doliguez shot 21 points as Metropac-SBU moved to solo second in the Foundation Group following a 67-55 conquest of Diliman-Gerry's, while Justin Gutang scattered 20 points, eight assists, six steals, and three rebounds to lead Go for Gold-CSB to a bounce back 102-87 victory over Batangas-EAC in the Aspirants Group.
The Knights saw their three-game winning run halted to drop to 3-2.
Comebacking Jerrick Balanza had 16 points, four rebounds, and two assists, Alvin Pasaol added 15 points and eight rebounds, while Jeo Ambohot chipped in 10 points and six boards for Petron-Letran.
