Sotto going overseas to pursue NBA dream.

As a kid slowly learning the rudiments of the game, Kai Sotto has dreamed of playing in the NBA someday.

The 7-foot-2 Sotto is about to take the first big step in a bid to attain that childhood wish.

In a lengthy Instagram post yesterday, Sotto announced his decision to leave Ateneo and go overseas, hoping and praying he’ll be the first full-blooded Filipino to ever play in the grandest stage of pro basketball.

“Nakapag-decide na po ako at ang pamilya ko. I’ll be leaving soon to start training full-time. I want to devote the next two to three years to single-mindedly focus on my goal of joining the NBA by 2021 or 2022,” he wrote.

Year 2018 was a big one for Sotto in high school basketball. He won the UAAP  Season 81 Juniors MVP award and led the Blue Eaglets to a runner-up finish in his third year behind the National U Bullpups.

He has yet to lay out a detailed plan on what he will do to get to the NBA, though European clubs including Real Madrid and Barcelona are bent on securing the 17-year-old’s services.

Sotto said that he and his family have taken everything in consideration with regards to his future.

“After a lot of effort by me and my dad to assess all the opportunities presented to me, I strongly feel, with his advice and the advice of other experienced mentors, that leaving immediately to start training and getting the right exposure will go a long way to help me realize my dream,” he said.

“Pinag-isipan ko po ito ng mabuti. I will train very hard and sacrifice and focus in the next few years so that one day soon, you will be very proud of me. Gagawin ko po lahat ng makakaya ko, with the guidance of my dad and mom, to be the very best that I can be.”

“Para po ito sa future ko, ng pamilya ko, at especially po, para sa Batang Gilas, Gilas Pilipinas, at higit sa lahat, para sa bayan!,” he said. “Sana po all of you will support me and pray for me. I will strive very hard and never let you down.”

At least four European clubs are eyeing to secure the services of Sotto, who is the son of a former PBA player Ervin.

Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Baskonia in Spain, as well as Alba Berlin in Germany have tendered their offers to the teenager to make a move to Europe, according to a report by Sportando.

The report cited that Sotto is looking to make a move to Europe to further develop his game against a higher level of competition.

Real Madrid has earlier been rumored as one of the pursuers for the  wunderkind’s services, among other offers from United States and Australia.
