Knights in big start

SAN Juan overpowered Malabon, 103-74, and Pasigueno subdued Rizaba, 79-65, to launch their campaigns in style in the Community Basketball Association (CBA) Founder's Cup at the San Juan Coliseum.

John Acol and Noah Lugo provided the 1-2 punch for San Juan as they combined for 41 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in the Knights' wire-to-wire victory in their debut.

Acol finished with  22 points, including 6-of-9 shooting from the three-point area, while Lugo added 19 points for San Juan,  which outscored Malabon, 64-37, in the second half and led by as many as 29 points.

Joseph Marquez contributed 10 points,  eight rebounds and four assists for the Knights of owners Joey Valencia and  Jay Cancio and coach Randy Alcantara.

James Castro and Jessie James Collado finished with 20 points apiece for  Arceegee Sportswear-supported Malabon team. 

Equallly impressive was Pasigueno, which played just hard enough to beat Rizaba in the first game.

Francis Ronquillo, Jerome Clarianes and Jonathan Boholano shared scoring honors for Pasigueno of team owner Raymond Lising and coach Lito Jacob.

Ronquilo finished with 15 points,  followed by Clarianes with 13 and Boholano with 12 for Pasigueno.

Rizaba was led by Mitch Lodia (19 points) and Alvin Se (13 points, 17 rebounds).

The CBA is establushed by actor-director Carlo Maceda,  with Pido Jarencio as consultant and Beaujing Acot as operations head.

Last Jan. 27,  One San Mateo subdued Malabon, 87-75, in the first-ever game of the newly-formed league.
