THERE’S life after the PBA, after all.
John Ferriols of the Taguig Generals was cited as World Balance “Player of the Week” in the South Division of the Metro League Open basketball tournament for the period Oct.14-20.
Ferriols, who was selected No. 12 pick overall by FedEX during the 2003 PBA Draft and played for six other PBA teams in 14 years in the pro league, starred in the Generals’ back-to-back victories over Marikina and Pateros to help his team grab the top spot with a 4-2 record in the South Division and advance to the semifinals of the tournament organized by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and supported by the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
The 44-year-old standout from Davao City, who also earned MVP honor in the inaugural MBA season in 1998, edged out Jahn Ryan Magbanua of San Juan and Lester Dickens of Las Piñas for top honor in the event which also has Synergy 88, San Miguel Corp., World Balance, Frabelle Foods, Summit Mineral Water, Alco Plus, Gerry’s Grill, Excellent Noodles, glitter.ph, SM Super Malls and Nature’s Spring as major sponsors.
Ferriols scored 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting and added 12 rebounds, five assists and two steals in Taguig’s 84-73 win over Marikina and followed it up with eight points, 11 rebounds, four assists, one steal and one shot block each in the Generals’ 85-67 rout of Pateros,
Jayford Rodriguez of Manila clinched the same honor in the North Division.
Rodriguez, a second round pick of Rain or Shine in the 2013 PBA Draft, had the biggest impact in the All-Stars’ back-to-back wins over Quezon City and San Juan.
That enabled Manila to assume solo lead in the North Division standings with a 5-1 record in the 10-team tournament which has “mobile app ng bayan” Barangay 143 as presentor, Spalding as the official ball and Team Rebel Sports as official outfitter.
Rodriguez, who beat teammate Almel Orquina, Aldrin Ligon of Caloocan and Gianne Paulo Rivera and Erwin Sta. Maria of Valenzuela, had a team-best 19 points in their win over Quezon City
Games resume tomorrow (Tuesday ) at the Hagonoy Sports Complex in Taguig with Manila, also already assured of a place in the division semis, eyeing a fourth straight win at the expense of winless Las Piñas at e 4 p.m.
Quezon City and Valenzuela battle for solo second place in the North Division at 5:30 p.m., and Taguig hosts Parañaque in the 7 p.m. third game in the South.
