The win that is hard to come by for Columbian Dyip in the PBA Governors’ Cup finally came on Friday, and interestingly, it came at the expense of the very team the Dyip had defeated too in the elimination round of the first two conferences.
The Dyip gave their all in the fourth period to subdue once more Rain or Shine, 100-84, and ensure they won’t exit the season-ending conference winless.
The Dyip, who will round out their elimination campaign with a game against Blackwater on Saturday at the Alonte Sports Arena, completed a hattrick of sort in a season against the Elasto Painters whom they also defeated in the Philippine Cup and the Commissioner’s Cup.
In the Philippine Cup, the Dyip (then still know as Kia), won only once and that was at the expense of Rain or Shine, and won four of their 11 games in the midseason Commissioner’s Cup, one of them was also at the expense of RoS.
It was by far the best game the Dyip have shown this conference, and RoS coach Caloy Garcia was on his toes as he kept complaining on the referees all gamelong at the Ynares Center.
The Painters were still within striking distance at the end of the third (68-63) and early in the fourth at 65-70 on two free throws by Ed Daquioag, when the Dyip suddenly accelerated their offense.
With Akeem Wright sinking a triple and Rashawn McCarthy adding two triples of his own in a 13-2 blitz, the Dyip found themselves enjoying an 83-67 lead which the Painters never got to overhaul anymore.
