HO CHI MINH, Vietnam -- Mission accomplished for Team Philippines.
The Philippines, represented by the Pinoy Youth Dreamers-Nino Jesus House of Studies, emerged as the overall champion in the first-ever Dreamers International 3x3 Basketball Challenge at the Australian International School gym in Vietnam.
Jhunerits Martin, Jon Prolles, Jan Daniel Geronimo and Jhoncel Nudo did the country proud with their strong performance in the three-day competition which attracted some of the best players in the region.
The Filipinos defeated BSA Vietnam, 21-16, in the thrilling championship match with Martin providing the heroics with his game-changing lay-up with 2:30 remaining.
The strong inside and outside game of Prolles and Geronimo and the deadly shooting of Nudo also proved more than enough for the Filipinos, who frustrated the Vietnamese's charge before a late home crowd.
The championship match was close with neither side giving any quarter until Prolles and Geronimo scored five straight points -- all on lay-up and three-point shot -- to put the Filipinos in good position to win.
“Thank God for the championship. The boys deserved to win the title. They worked harder and played better than their foreign counterparts,” said PYD founding president/coach Beaujing Acot.
PYD-NJHS team sponsor Rinbert Galarde of Arceegee Sportswear was also pleased with the team’s success.
“I am very happy for the team -- the players and the coaching staff. They really made the country proud,” said Galarde.
Joining the team are coach Migs Geronimo and assistant coaches Mario Fernandez, Bong Julia, and Vengie Gabales.
Acot and the PYD-NJHS team thanked the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) , Smart Communication Inc, Buddy’s Pancit Lucban, Regent Food Corporation, Batis Armin Hotel and Resort, Hygienix Alcohol Splash Corporation, JAMAN, Hook Up Clothing and Watches, H+Autoworks, Xpress Printing, Arceege Sportswear and Barangay San Antonio, Pasig City.
