BOCAUE, Bulacan -- Sweeter the fifth time around for June Mar Fajardo of San Miguel Beer.
As expected, Fajardo bagged his fifth straight PBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award during the Leo Awards on Sunday at the Philippine Arena here. Fajardo surpassed Alvin Patrimonio of Pureoods and Mon Fernandez of Toyota/San Miguel Beer with the most number of MVP trophies.
It is also the PBA record for most number of MVPs won in consecutive years.
Fajardo, who averaged 20.6 points, 12.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks for the Beermen last year, garnered 2, 436 points to beat Stanley Pringle of NorthPort Batang Pier for the award.
Pringle, the new scoring champion, had 2,041 points.
The 6-10 pride of Compostela, Cebu won in the media votes with 777, and the PBA votes with 300, while accumulating 1,032 statistical points and 327 player votes.
Pringle topped the statistical points with 1,107 and player votes with 395, but got only 389 media votes and 150 PBA votes.
Pringle is also set to be honored by the PBA Press Corp as the scoring champion for being the league’s top gunner last season with an average of 21.0 points per outing.
Jason Perkins of Phoenix edged former La Salle teammate Jeron Teng of Alaska Milk for the Rookie of the Year award.
Gabe Norwood of Rain or Shine bagged the Sportsmanship Award and Scottie Thompson of Ginebra was named Most Improved Player.
In winning the Most Improved Player award, Thompson averaged 9.1 points, 9.0 rebounds, 5.6 assists, and 1.4 steals in Season 43.
He had 8.5 points. He averaged 7.8 rebounds, 4.4 assists, and 1.0 steals from the season before.
Fajardo and Pringle were joined by Paul Lee of Magnolia, Japeth Aguilar of Ginebra and Marcio Lassiter of San Miguel in the first PBA Mythical Team.
Thompson. Mark Barroca of Magnolia, Arwind Santos of San Miguel, Poy Erram of Blackwater and Matthew Wright of Phoenix were named to the second Mythical Team.
Fajardo, Norwood, Rafi Reavis of Magnolia, Rome Dela Rosa of Magnolia and Chris Ross of San Miguel were named to the All-Defensive Team.
The Leo Awards presentation was held before the opening game between Ginebra and Talk N Text.
