
St. Peter, Grace Christian College in big starts

ST. PETER School survived a big scare to bring down St. Jude College, 77-75, at the start.of the first Tanduay Athletics-Metro Manila Tiong Lian Alumni men’s basketball tournament at the Chiang Kai Shek College gym.
Kerby Chua scattered 26 points, including eight in the fourth and final quarter, to help St. Peter stave off a late comeback by St. Jude and escape with the victory in the 40 years old and above division.
Equally impressive was Grace Christian College, which outsteadied St. Stephen High School, 70-68, in overtime.
MMTL alumni project director Christian Tan made the ceremonial toss, along with Lucio “Bong” Tan of the sponsoringTanduay Athletics.
Also present were MMTL Alumni operations head Johny Tam, MMTL 40-above commissioner Horacio Lim and 50-above commissioner Roger Sia.
St. Jude, which rallied from as many as 13-point deficit, had a chance to send the game into overtime but Louie Kaw missed two pressure-packed free throws with three seconds remaining.
Kaw’s free throws came after Domingo Chung split his own charities to give St. Peter a 77-75 lead with still eight seconds left.
Rolexon Kiat added 11 points, Ritchy Chan added 10 points and 12 rebounds, Tracy Jasper Ng added 10 points and seven rebounds and John Palao had 10 points for St. Peter.
Kaw topscored for St. Jude with 27 points on a respectable 9-of-15 shooting in a virtual scoring duel with Chua.
Bong Tan had a good all-around game for St. Jude with 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Ingleberg Kaw also had a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Overall, St. Peter made 27 of 70 shots for 38 percentcompared to St. Jude’s 25-of-74 for 33 percent.
St. Peter also hit 5-of-17 (29 percent) from the three-point area against st. Jude’s 2-of-22 (9 percent).
Last Nov. 12, Grace Christian proved steadier at crunch time to subdue St. Stephen, 70-68.
GCC relied on Francis Sy’s free throw with seven seconds left and watched Franklin Lee of St. Stephen miss a potential game-winning three-pointer just before the buzzer sounded.
Albert Edsel Chua finished with 18 points for GCC, including a three-point shot with still 28 seconds left that sent the game into overtime at 51-all
Dexter Quan added 12 points and five assists, and Edwin Yap had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds for GCC
Lawrence Ngo had 17 points, Alain Andres had 13 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
