COLUMBIAN Dyip are back in the groove in the 2019 Honda PBA Philippine Cup.
The Dyip got plenty of breaks late in the third period where they also uncorked a vicious run which eventually gave them control on the way to a 110-100 spanking of NorthPort at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
Trailing 77-72 late in the third and with most of NorthPort’s gunners on the bench due to fouls, the Dyip took advantage of the situation to launch an offensive which enabled them to seize an 86-79 lead at the end of the third.
With the Batang Pier’s offensive seemingly in tatters, the Dyip then sustained their own run to stretch their lead to as many as 94-82 after an 8-3 tear capped by Jackson Corpuz’s conversion of Rashawn McCarthy’s perfect feed at the baseline.
It was an easy sailing from there for the Dyip who have now rebounded from a 108-98 loss to Phoenix Pulse last January 23 and picked up their second win in three games in a tie with the Batang Pier.
Corpuz, Reden Celda and Jeepey Faundo finished with 15 points each, McCarthy chipped in 14, while JP Calvo, CJ Perez and Eric Camson added 12 points each in a remarkable excellent marksmanship by the Dyip.
Jeepey Faundo and CJ Perez carried the scoring load for the Dyip while Mo Tautuaa provided the sparks for Batang Pier in a game of changing fortunes in the first half.
Faundo and Perez each scored 10 points for the Dyip dragged the Batang Pier in a close encounter from the start.
Rashawn McCarthy translated his own steal into a basket while Perez scored back-to-back layups at the onset of the second as the Dyip erased a first quarter 28-24 loss to grab the upperhand at 30-28.
Robert Bolick tied the count for NorthPort at 30-all with a layup. The score was still tied at 35-all following Tautuaa’s triple, before Faundo and JR Reyes connected a basket each to highlight a brief run that gave Columbian a 41-35 lead.
The Batang Pier then quickly reacted to the mounting Dyip momentum, unloading a scoring run highlighted by a triple each from Tautuaa and Pringle for a 55-51b lead at the turn.
Rain or Shine returns to action today after beating NLEX last January 18, playing Barangay Ginebra in a lone out-of-town game in Calasiao, Pangasinan.
The Elasto Painters, who defeated the Road Warriors (96-87), and the Gin Kings meet at 5 p.m. at the Calasiao Sports Complex. The Gin Kings are seeking to bounce back from a 99-91 loss to San Miguel Beer.
