GAB to get tough on Pacquiao

October 02, 2018

WORLD boxing champion Manny Pacquiao will have to pass the necessary medical clearance before he can fight again.

Games and Amusement Board (GAB) Chairman Abraham "Baham" Mitra said Pacquiao, like all other professional boxers, will be asked  to submit a cardio-clearance from a reputable hospital before he can climb the ring again

"GAB, as  the government supervising and regulatory body, is mandated to check the phycical condition of the boxer and determine if he is fit to fight,” said  Mitra during his monthly session with officers of the Tabloid Organization in Philippine Sports (TOPS) at the GAB office in Makati.

“Wala pong exception dito. Lahat ng ating mga boxers ay sumasailalim sa nasabing proseso,” added Mitra.

"In case of Sen. Pacquiao, the  GAB will have to make sure he is fit to fight again since   “he  himself  admitted he underwent medical check up at the Cardinal Santos Hospital  due to shortness of breath just before his July 15 fight against Lucas Matthysse of Argentina.:

GAB Medical Department head  Dr. Redentor Viernes said GAB will ask for Pacquiao's permission to check   his  medical   record at the Cardinal Santos “since this is private in nature.”

“Nakagugulat talaga na inborn yung sakit ni Sen. Pacquiao. Sa tagal niya sa boksing,  na kung saan may halos 60 fights,  hindi mo iisipin na may ganun  siyang  sakit. Kailangan talaga masuri ng maigi,: said Dr. Viernes

No less than Pacquiao's two biggest allies --  President Duterte and  Ilocos Sur Gov. Chavit Singson--  have urged him  to seriously consider retirement soon, especially after reports of his heart condition surfaced.

Pacquiao is reportedly set to fight again either before the end of the year or early part of 2019 against a still-unnamed opponent.

Another report said the Filipino boxing legend is eyeing a rematch against undefeated American champion Floyd Mayweather before he finally hang up his gloves.

“Yung Pacquiao-Mayweather rematch -- maganda ito para sa boxing. Maganda ito para kay Pacquiao at sa ating bansa. Pero dapat matiyak muna  natin na maganda pa ang kanyang kundisyon at hindi sya malagay sa panganib,” added Mitra.

“Right now, Philippine boxing is doing well. We have regular meetings with  matchmakers and promoters. We are  discussing ways and means to  better uplift  the welfare of   boxers and  their families. And  aside from  Sen. Pacquiao, we have world-class fighters like Jerwin Ancajas, Donnie Nietes and Michael Dasmarinas.”

Meanwhile, the GAB Legal Department reported a  total of 22 new cases, prepared 50 orders and issued 12 resolutions as part of its mandate.

Of  the  22 new cases,  20 are in boxing, one in billiards  and one admin.

GAB may initiate,  undertake, hear and decide any investigation for any violation of rules and regulations concerning professional sports and games. The GAB Legal Division is in charge of pursuing cases or complaints against any player or athlete or official in professional sports and games who may be found guilty.
